After Quintessence: The Complete Kala Recordings 1973

After leaving Quintessence in 1972, Phil 'Shiva' Jones and Dave 'Maha Dev' Coddling formed a band called Kala who released one album and one single in 1973. Hux Records will reissue the Kala LP as After Quintessence: The Complete Kala Recordings 1973, on June 20, 2010 along with six never before heard bonus tracks. The CD includes a 16 booklet with the Kala story by Colin Harper and interviews with Phil 'Shiva' Jones and Dave 'Maha Dev' Coddling.

Here is the first review that will appear in an upcoming issue of Shindig magazine (UK):

It was a pleasant surprise to discover that a lost Quintessence album had slipped under this writer's radar unnoticed, but then as the fascinating booklet by Colin Harper reveals, when lead vocalist Phil 'Shiva' Jones and guitarist Dave 'Maha Dev' Codling were fired in 1972, by band founder Raja Ram, they took with them the musical fire of Quintessence into a new band Kala, who released one little known album on the Bradley's Records label (known for its success with The Goodies!) But what a great album this is, taking the Quintessence sound into more commercial realms with some Mighty Baby like country rock, a wonderful harmony filled West Coast Psych ripper 'Thirsty Generation' and the Quintessence-like spiritual voyages of 'Meditations' which features just the right balance of firey improvisation and melodic invention. At its weakest the inevitable '70s boogie takes over, but overall the balance is favourable. [by Richard Allen]
